From AlphaFold 3 to AlphaGenome, Google DeepMind and Google Cloud are providing European researchers with access to frontier scientific AI models and $3 million in computing credits.
Imagine AI helping researchers understand DNA, investigate molecular structures, forecast dangerous weather and analyse satellite data.
That is the opportunity behind Google's latest initiative.
Google DeepMind and Google Cloud plan to provide up to 200 European researchers with access to advanced AI tools and $3 million in computing credits.
The goal? Help scientists tackle complex research problems faster.
Google is making several scientific AI technologies available through the programme.
1. AlphaFold 3 — Understand molecules
Helps researchers predict how proteins and other biological molecules interact, supporting work in biology and drug discovery.
2. AlphaGenome — Explore DNA
Analyses DNA sequences to help scientists understand how genetic variations may affect biological processes.
3. WeatherNext — Predict weather
Uses AI to generate weather forecasts, helping researchers study weather patterns and extreme events.
4. AlphaEvolve — Discover algorithms
Uses AI to develop and optimise algorithms for mathematics and computing.
5. AlphaEarth Foundations — Understand our planet
Combines Earth-observation data to help analyse land use, environmental changes and other planetary patterns.
These tools address different scientific challenges, but share one goal: making complex data more useful to researchers.
Advanced AI research requires more than a clever idea.
Researchers may need specialised computing infrastructure, large datasets and expensive processing capacity to test their hypotheses.
Computing credits can lower some of those barriers—particularly for researchers who cannot easily secure large amounts of computing power.
However, credits are not the same as unrestricted funding, and access to AI tools does not guarantee a scientific breakthrough.
The potential applications are significant:
AI can help scientists explore possibilities and analyse data. Researchers still need to validate results through experiments, evidence and peer review.
Technology companies are increasingly competing to put advanced AI into the hands of scientists—not just everyday users.
Google's programme is part of a broader shift towards AI-powered scientific discovery.
The next major AI breakthrough might not be a chatbot that writes better answers. It could be a research tool that helps a scientist uncover something previously unknown.
The future of AI may be measured not only by what it can say, but by what it helps humanity discover.
